So last night Samuel was sent upstairs to get ready for bed. He climbed up in his rocking chair to reach the top drawer where his pj's are kept and in the process of trying to pull the drawer open he knocked off his cactus "garden" (small pot of about 4 different kinds of cactus). Instead of just letting the cactus fall on the ground, he reached out and caught it with his neck, chest and arms. Darrell ran upstairs and then called me for back up. My precious 4 yr old had thorns in two different places on his forehead, all under his neck, on his chest and under his arms where he caught the cactus. They were tiny white little prongs off the cactus - that looked alot like Samuel's hair (tiny and blond) - so it was really hard to see what was cactus thorns and what was body hair. However, a red rash appeared soon after and everywhere we touched him brought him to tears. After a bath, some tylenol, lots of TLC, and his favorite pajamas we were able to call it a night. Darrell couldn't believe he caught the cactus (much less that a 4 yr old has a cactus garden) but I told him he was very brave - isn't that what your Mom is supposed to do? :)
We made up for the traumatic night by a trip to the zoo today. Samuel has never really enjoyed the zoo - the elephants as the first exhibit usually set the tone for the rest of the trip. But he has branched out a good bit in the last year and I thought it was time to try again. We invited one of our friends, put our little sister in the stroller, packed water bottles, applied suncreen and set out. Despite the 93 degree temp and most of the animals hiding in the shade Samuel enjoyed it. After the zoo we went to Chic-fil-a for lunch - air conditioning and an indoor playground!! When we finally got home, I asked Samuel if he had fun and enjoyed going to the zoo? His reply......"no, not really....but actually, I did enjoy eating lunch with Carrie at Chic-fil-a". So much for making the family pass worth it.......but like with most things involving small children, we'll try again, and again, and again.
I am...what I say I am...and I am...what I say I am....

Stewart Family Mission Statement
Back in April, our family (Darrell's Mom's brother and sister) got together in Lenior, NC to celebrate several April birthdays and attend Goudapalooza '08. As part of the celebration each family was asked to bring their Mission Statement. As you can see, I miss using the marketing/advertising part of my brain. We collected famous "tag lines" to create our mission statement.
The Stewart Family Mission Statement:
As a growing family we believe “We get it”. There has been “One love since 1994”. We “Believe in the best” and believe “This is the place to be”. We love our family and it is “Grown for pleasure”.
Every morning we “Wake up with the King “ and always “Answer to a higher authority”.
Mommy believes “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup” and we frequently find ourselves wondering “Got milk?”
Each day we promise to “Grab life by the horns”, even when “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” because we believe “We bring good things to life” and “Quality is job one”. Often times “The only easy day was yesterday” and yet we are still grateful. We strive for “Getting things done” with our “Heart to God, hand to man”.
At the end of the day we still shout “Just do it”, “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”, and “Be all you can be”. But on the occasional “You deserve a break today”, “For all you do, this Bud's for you”. Because there are days where “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't”.
So, “Life's good” and “There's no life like it”. “Feel the force”. “It's everywhere you want to be”.
Because at the end of the day “You can't top the copper top”. “He keeps going and going and going”.
